Anaheim no magic kingdom for shooters Thursday

ANAHEIM, Ca. – The first set of CIF Southern Section boys’ basketball championship games were played Thursday night in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.

They might have meant a lot of things to a lot of folks in the building – remember, three teams went home with titles; the others left with the frustrating of coming oh-so-close to bagging that championship hardware.

But one thing the three contests had in common was that they were anything but offensive “works of art”.

Depending on your perspective – sort of the hoops’ version of “the glass if half full or half empty” kind of deal – the games were either examples of defense at its best or shooting at something well short of that.

In the first of those boys’ clashes, and in a game that tipped off at 3 o’clock which created quite the cozy setting with a few hundred watching, San Pedro’s Rolling Hills Prep pulled away from L.A. Shalhevet down the stretch for a 50-36 victory.

The winners shot .438 from the field from the game – which, as it turned out, was going to be a relatively blazing performance.

Six-foot-ten junior center Jimbo Lull scored 20 points with 14 rebounds and three blocked shots while senior wing Aron Rudd added 16 points and seven rebounds for the victorious Huskies.

The Firehawks were good on just 12 of 54 shots from the floor — .222. Oucherino!

Senior guard Joseph Fallas scored 22 points for Shalevet despite missing 14 of his 21 shots.

The first quarter of the next boys’ tilt ended with Tustin in front of Simi Valley Royal, 3-2.

Don’t do a double-take – you read right: 3-2!

The teams, playing for the 3AAA title, were a combined two of 21 from the field in the first quarter and eight of 39 in a first half that ended with Tustin in front, 14-6!

The Tillers, whose matchup zone strangled Royal’s half-court offense all night, finally started heating up after intermission and went on for a convincing 49-32 victory.

Xavier Powell and Deondre Bryant scored 15 points apiece for the Tillers while forward Nick Hornsby – despite missing nine of 12 shots – had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Thanks to a fourth quarter in which it scored 17 points, Royal finished at .235 from the field with senior MIT-bound forward Scott Woods leading the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

In the finale, La Verne Damien pulled away down the stretch, 11-zip, to knock off Santa Margarita, 54-40, for the 3AA crown.

Senior forward Ayo Adedeji hit seven of 10 shots from the field (three behind the arc) for a game-high 18 points  as well as a night’s-best 13 rebounds while sophomore guard Jeremy Hemsley added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Spartans, who bagged their school’s first-ever Southern Section hoops championship.

Junior guard Devonte Klines led the Eagles (who shot .269 from the field) with 16 points.

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
