SAN DIEGO – Most of the first 22 Torrey Pines Holiday Prep Classic events can easily be classified as among the very best of the post-Christmas boys hoops tournaments – both regionally and nationally.
And the 23rd version of the event – sponsored by Under Armour – figures to slip neatly into that category as well.
Five separate tournaments – the National, American, Mayor’s, Governor’s and Senator’s – will once again be held under the banner of the TPHPC, with the National Division stacked with its usual cache of top-flight programs, from within California and beyond.
Foremost among the National entries are Richmond Salesian, Sacramento Sheldon, Taft and Windward (each from Los Angeles), Tacoma (WA) Lincoln, Houston’s St. John’s, Oakland Bishop O’Dowd and San Diego Francis Parker.
Salesian is led by three players who signed with Division I programs in November, including 6-foot-five Jabari Bird (who is bound the University of California in Berkeley).
Sheldon is paced by 6-6 Dakarai Allen, who signed with San Diego State in November.
Tacoma (WA) Lincoln is one of the better teams in Washington behind the play of a couple of future Pac-12 players in senior forward Tre’Shaun Lexing and junior point guard Ahmaad Rorie
Lexing signed with the Colorado and Rorie is verbally “committed” to California.
San Diego Francis Parker has one of the best skilled post players in the junior class in 6-9 Evan Fitzner.
Torrey Pines has one of the finest freshmen in California in 6-3 Brandon Cyrus.
Some intriguing individual matchups figure to take place Wednesday night.
Those are, at 5:50, Bird vs. 6-4 Kris Yanku, Northern Arizona-bound and one of the best players in the L.A. City ranks; and, at 9:05, St. John’s 6-6 junior Justise Winslow vs. O’Dowd’s sensational 6-8 sophomore Ivan Rabb.
Here are the first-day games for the National and American divisions. For complete matchups in all divisions, go to www.torreypinesbasketball.com.
