San Fernando Valley teams roll at Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, Ca. – Another night of hoops at Santa Monica High and another night of decidedly one-sided outcomes during the third annual “The Tournament”.

Top seed El Camino Real rolled past L.A. Fremont, 85-30, during a Tuesday night when only one of the four contests was decided by as few as 15 points.

One thing is certain: The four quarterfinal contests will all be much, much more competitive than were the opening round games.

The first two of those quarterfinals, Brentwood vs. Loyola (6:30) and host Santa Monica vs. Crenshaw (8 o’clock), will be played Wednesday evening.

The other two quarterfinals are set for Thursday night at 6:30 (Alemany vs. West Ranch) and 8 o’clock (El Camino Real vs. Chaminade).

Coach David Rebibo’s ECR Conquistadores are heavily favored to win the L.A. City’s Division I championship and showed why Tuesday night while dominating the Pathfinders.

They don’t have a necessarily “dominant” low-post scoring threat – someone you just toss the ball into and let him go to work – and don’t have a plethora of exceptional jump shooters.

But there isn’t a better transition team in Southern California, with junior point guard Maleke Haynes among the fastest point guards anywhere and classmate Julian Richardson capable of either directing breaks or finishing at the end of them.

The frontcourt is led by senior Michael Thomas – the Most Outstanding Player during the Pasadena High-hosted Rose City Tournament won by ECR last week – and Hawaii’s signing him in November is going to prove one of the real coups of the fall signing period.

Juniors Julian Rochelin and Evan Wardlow round out the starting frontcourt, meaning there are fourth 11th graders in Rebibio starting lineup. Yes, the surface of the potential of this team is just beginning to be tapped.

Chaminade (which knocked off Sylmar, 73-58, Tuesday night) has a pair of big and promising post players in 6-8 junior Jack Williams and 6-9 freshman Trevor Stanback.

But Coach Todd Wolfson also has an underrated backcourt in seniors Jaron Martin and Griffin Cohen.

Martin is solid as both a scorer and playmaker while Cohen looked like one of the best “catch-and-shoot”-types in Southern California Tuesday night.

West Ranch (located in Valencia, near Magic Mountain) cruised against Palmdale, 75-39, Tuesday night to set up its quarterfinal with Alemany Thursday night.

The Wildcats have one of California’s most underrated posts in 6-8 Ako Kaluna, who provides a forceful presence at both ends of the floor. Throw him into the “a big-time steal” category among the players signing in November. He’s quite a “get” for Jack Murphy and his Northern Arizona program.

Alemany (which knocked off Culver City, 68-47) is another San Fernando Valley program with a lot of underclass talent.

Guard K.J. Moffett is the only senior in a Trey Meeks-coached starting lineup that also includes juniors Brandon Boyd (an outstanding defensive back on the gridiron) and 6-5 Bear Henderson, sophomore jump shooting-specialist Benny Boatwright and 5-8 freshman Shacquille Dawkins.

The Indians also have another tremendous freshman prospect coming off the bench in 6-7 Daron Henson, who is among the very best prospects in the western class of 2016.

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
