PASADENA, Ca. – Tuesday’s Day II of the 9th Rose City Roundball Classic, hosted by the very capable Tim Tucker-led basketball staff and supporters at Pasadena High, produced nary a suspense-laden outing during its four games.
Such is life – and basketball. It can’t all be down-to-final-moments, buzzer-beating action, right?
But, as was the case with Monday night’s four opening tilts, the results did set the stage for some intriguing quarterfinal contests.
Top seed El Camino Real (77-30 over Granite Hills) and Cantwell (which toppled L.A. Washington Prep, 58-25) overwhelmed their opposition Tuesday night to roll into their Thursday night, 8 o’clock, quarterfinal showdown.
That being said, the most impressive performance of Tuesday evening was likely turned in by Renaissance Academy, which dominated a quality Muir squad, 67-51.
The Wildcats earned a Thursday night (6:30) quarterfinal game against Leuzinger, which rolled over a short-handed (minus a couple of key players as well as its head coach) Sylmar squad, 76-48.
El Camino Real is the deepest – and the best – team in the L.A. City Section this season, even with a preponderance of juniors on Coach David Rebibo’s roster.
Cantwell (coached by George Zedan), has one of the Southland’s best seniors in 6-3 Jose Estrada-Stone, with quality post play and a multitude of jump shooters to go with him.
Renaissance Academy (led by Coach Sid Cooke) has outstanding size and skill across its lineup with plenty of depth, as well.
Leuzinger has a lot of quality guards – in fact, Coach Ali Parvaz basically starts an all-guard lineup, with one of the Southland’s best PGs leading the way in Eric Childress.
Wednesday’s lineup at PHS: (consolation quarterfinals) 3:30, Ventura vs. La Verne Lutheran; 5, Cleveland vs. Canoga Park AGBU; (championship quarterfinals); 6:30, Long Beach Jordan vs. L.A. Price; 8, Pasadena vs. Chino Hills.
