The 2012-13 Southern California high school hoops season gets underway in earnest with the usual litany of top-flight tournaments this week.

My travel plans will take me to at least four of those this week (six days, beginning tonight), where I will see a large number of the best teams AND players in the Southland.

Those include the 61st Pacific Shores Tournament (at Redondo Union High); the 9th Rose City Roundball Classic (at Pasadena High); the Diablo Inferno (at Mission Viejo High); and the inaugural “Tip-Off at the Empire” (held on both the Corona Centennial and Etiwanda campuses).

The “grand daddy” of tourney action, the Pacific Shores, has a 12-team field headed up by Long Beach Poly, projected by many as the top club in Southern California this season.

The Jackrabbits have a couple of Pacific 12 Conference-bound players in Roschon Prince (USC) and Jordan Bell (Oregon).

The Rose City Roundball Classic field includes El Camino Real, projected to be the best club in the L.A. City ranks.

The Diablo Inferno field includes many of Orange County’s best clubs, including the most Diablos, Capistrano Valley, JSerra, Foothill and Villa Park.

Corona Centennial and Etiwanda will host some of Southern California’s best teams, including the host teams, Compton and Inglewood.

The semifinals and finals of each will be played on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Follow my Twitter account — @FrankieBur – and my www.BurlisonOnBasketball.com reports for daily insights into the action!

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
