LONG BEACH, CA – The TV matchups are set for the 2012 of adidas Nations third-place and championship games Monday night at Long Beach City College.

And a couple of former NBA standouts, serving as coaches, will lead their respective teams into the title game (set to tip off at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET).

The CBS Sports Network will televise both games, with one of the sport’s great play-by-play announcers – Joel Meyers – calling the action.

The team from Australia – featuring two of the best teen-aged prospects in the world, 6-foot-8 Ben Simmons and 6-5 Dante Exum, who turned 16 and 17, respectively, just a couple of weeks ago – will face USA 2014 Blue (juniors-to-be from the United State) at 8 o’clock (ET).

And then the USA 2013 Blue (coached by Reggie Theus) faces USA 2014 Red (coached by Don MacLean) in the championship game.

Hoops fans based in Southern California can readily watch the game in person – assuming they can drive to Long Beach Monday evening.

Both admission and parking are free.

The 2014 Red squad was beaten by 2013 Blue, 102-88, in a pool-play game Sunday morning.

Theus’ team is especially strong up by front, led by three 6-foot-8 standouts in Devin Williams, Jarell Martin and Jermaine Lawrence.

Williams (from Cincinnati; he is set to attend Montverde Academy in Florida this fall) had 24 points in the victory over the 2014 Red Sunday morning, while Martin (Baton Rouge) also chipped in with 24 (with 11 rebounds) and Lawrence (New York City) had eight points and seven rebounds.

Point guards Nate Britt (Washington, DC) and Nigel Williams-Goss (Henderson, NV) combined for 25 points and six assists in the victory.

MacLean has two of the best juniors-to-be in the U.S. on his squad in forward Noah Vonleh and point guard Emmanuel Mudiay. They combined for 27 points and eight assists in the Sunday morning loss

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
