BELLFLOWER, Ca. – What shapes up as one of the elite Southern California hoops events of the summer will get under way Monday afternoon, with St. John Bosco High serving as the event’s headquarters.

The 32-team, Braves Varsity Summer Classic will be played in four prep gyms over the course of five days (no games will be played on July 4), with the championship game set for Saturday afternoon, 3 o’clock, at SJB.

Besides the host school, games will also be played at Compton Dominguez, Lakewood St. Joseph and Redondo Beach Redondo Union.

For complete schedules and daily results, go to the tournament website at http://www.HTOsports.com/boscobraveshoops.

The teams are divided into eight pools, with teach team getting three “pool-play” games before the event goes into tournament format.

The top seeds in the respective pools are St. John Bosco (A), Santa Ana Mater Dei (B), L.A. Westchester (C), Pasadena (D), Gardena Serra (E), Inglewood (F), Compton (G) and Bishop Montgomery (H).

Based upon action in June tournament actions, Bishop Montgomery is likely the pre-tournament favorite.

The Knights won tournaments at Compton High (beating the host Tarbabes in the final) and Westchester (knocking off the host Comets Saturday night).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
