LONG BEACH, CA – The 10th annual Pangos All-American Camp, put together by Dinos Pangos, will serve as the tip-off of sorts to the start of  the 2012 summer camp and tournament trail this weekend.

Cabrillo High on the west side of Long Beach (2001 Santa Fe Avenue) plays host to the event, which is scheduled to feature 110 or so of the better high school hoopsters across the country.

Each player is expected to play at least seven “camp” games, with the game schedule set to tip off at 8:30 Friday evening.

Games get underway Saturday at 3 o’clock (following a two-hour skills workout session conducted by Jeremy Russotti) and wrap up at about 9:30.

The players are back in action at 9 Sunday morning, with the camp all-star games scheduled for 11:30 a.m. (Top 50) and 1 p.m. (Top 25).

Some of the top non-West Coast players expected to attend include a handful of potential 2013 McDonald’s All-Americans who have already committed to colleges, including 6-foot-8 Isaiah Hicks (Oxford, NC, Webb/University of North Carolina); 6-1 Connor Frankamp (Wichita, KS, North/University of Kansas); 6-2 Anton Gill (Raleigh, NC, Ravenscroft/Louisville) and 6-0 Derrick Walton (Detroit, MI, Chandler/University of Michigan).

Western-based members of the 2013 class who have already committed to four-year institutions and are expected to be in the LBC for the event include 6-3 Julian Jacobs (Las Vegas, NV, Desert Pines/University of Utah); 6-3 Nigel Williams-Goss (Henderson, NV, Findlay Prep/University of Washington) and 6-4 Cullen Neal (Albuquerque, NM, El Dorado/Saint Mary’s).

Other “national” players of note expected to compete include 6-1 Solomon Poole (Jacksonville, FL, Parker); 6-4 Kendal Harris (Richardson, TX, Berkner); 6-4 Allerik Freeman (Henderson, NV, Findlay Prep) and 6-8 Johnathan Williams (Memphis, TN, Southwest).

Top-flight players who don’t have to travel quite as far to Cabrillo include 6-7 Jordan Bell (from Poly, located just a few miles northeast of Cabrillo); 6-4 Isaac Hamilton and his 6-7 junior-to-be brother, Daniel (both from Bellflower’s St. John Bosco) and 5-7 Parker Jackson-Cartwright (L.A. Loyola).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
