Andrew Wiggins: Oh, my!

HAYWARD, CA – Three wonderful matchups between teams during the Sunday afternoon/evening sessions of games at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League were hoops fans’ bargains to watch at the $10 admission charged.

Are you ready for some recaps?

Here we go:

*Indy Spiece Heat 67, Bluff City (Team Penny/Memphis) 64: This game had the most chill-inducing final few minutes of any during the first three days of the last of the four EYBL weekend sessions (the first three of which were in Minneapolis; Hampton, VA; and Dallas).

Bluff City led by 12 points at intermission (the games are divided into 16-minute halves) but the lads from the Indianapolis-based squad seized control of things via the plays of guard Bryson Scott (committed to Purdue) and 2014 prospects Trevon Blueitt, Jayquan Lyle and Tre Lyles.

With Indy up by three, 6-foot-6 left-hander Nicholas King drilled in a 3-pointer with 56 seconds remaining to tie the score.

Blueitt then answered with a 3 from the deep corner with about 35 seconds to play to put his squad back up before King – who had four 3s in the contest – answered with yet another shot from behind the arc to deadlock the scores.

Finally, the 6-5 Lyle had the ball in his hands with either a victory for Indy or overtime at stake – and it proved to be the former as he hit a step-back 3 at the buzzer.

*Team Texas Titans 63, Mac Irvin (Chicago) 59: The standing-room-only crowd in the stands and surrounding the court gathered in large part for the “showdown” between Mac Irvin’s Jabari Parker and Titans’ Julius Randle – the two top prospects, according to many recruiting gurus, in the national class of 2013.

Each had moments of “oh, my goodness” reactions from those watching but, ultimately, it was the Titans that got more quality performances across the board than did the Chicago lads.

Randle finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds and got a lot of help from future Duke jump-shooting specialist Matt Jones (19 points and eight rebounds).

Parker didn’t shoot well but had a couple of spectacular, LeBron James-like drives and finishes while ending with 14 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore center Jahil Okafor had his best effort of the weekend for Mac Irvin with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

*CIA Bounce 69, Houston Hoops 64: The No. 1 junior-to-be in the world certainly lived up to that tag in this one.

Six-seven Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Canadian squad. Most of the hoops by Wiggins were of the “did he just do that?”-variety.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
