LAS VEGAS, NV –  The was no shortage of high-profile targets for the college basketball coaches who descended upon Bishop Gorman High Friday evening for the 6 o’clock (Pacific Time) start of the NCAA’s weekend-long recruiting evaluation period.

*The Las Vegas Prospects 17-under squad opened Pangos Spring Spectacular play with a wire-to-wire victory over the Arizona Aces/Dream 17-under team.

Class of 2013 point guard Julian Jacobs (Desert Pines), who recently committed to the University of Utah, and 6-foot-3 senior swingman Sir Washington (Clark) paced their squad to a victory over the team led by impressive 6-8 post player Joe Boyd (Scottsdale Chaparral).

The Prospects also have a dandy weapon on their side – 6-9 Christian Wood (Findlay Prep), who is expected to sign with UNLV in November, is the best jump-shooting big man in the class of 2013.

*The Danny Granger DI Ambassadors Elite of Albuquerque are led by what promises to be one of the more scintillating backcourts on the spring/summer travel circuit in 2012.

And Bryce Alford (La Cueva High) and Cullen Neal (El Dorado) looked the pair of one of the best set of prep guards anywhere Friday night, knocking in jumpers and dishing dazzling assists in their clubs’ pummeling of San Diego-based Gamepoint 17 Black.

Alford will be playing for dad Steve at the University of New Mexico in 2013-14 while Neal – son of UNM Associate Head Coach Craig Neal – plans to sign a letter of intent with Saint Mary’s next November.

*With representatives from seemingly every Ivy League program, as well as coaches from Stanford and California – among many others – watching from courtside, 6-7 Hunter Myers (Douglas High in Minden, NM) of the Nevada CC Wolverines-Black put on a remarkable jump shooting, passing and rebounding display while helping his team ease past Salt Lake City-based A-Train Magic Black.

I’m not sure I’ll see a better “student-athlete” this spring and summer.

He reportedly ranks first, academically, in his Douglas class.

That’s a pretty good combination, eh?

*Dinos Trigonis has one of his best rosters in recent memory for Belmont Shore (based out of Long Beach, CA) and it was on display in fine form Friday night during an eased-up victory over the Ysidro Cougars (made of underclassmen from San Ysidro High in San Diego).

Among those at Trigonis’ disposal – 6-7 Daniel Hamilton (Bellflower St. John Bosco), 6-1 Ikenna Iroegbu (Oak Hill Academy) and 6-4 Tyler Dorsey (L.A. Ribet Academy).

*And in one of the more well-played games of the evening, the Arizona Select 17s edged the Bay Area Hoosiers, 68-62.

The Arizona club was led by 6-5 sophomore Jake Toolson (Gilbert Highland) and another 10th grader, 6-9 Payton Dastrup (Mesa Mountain).

The Hoosiers have some of Northern California’s best juniors, notably 6-4 Elliott Pitts (Concord De La Salle), 6-6 Noah Allen (Salinas Palma) and 6-0 Markel Leonard (Richmond Salesian)

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
