NEW ORLEANS – Squads representing the East and South came out winners Sunday afternoon during the second All-American Championship games that were played at the Lakefront Arena.

Future Big East Conference players Omar Calhoun (Brooklyn, NY, Christ The King/bound for Connecticut) and Ricardo Ledo (South Kent School, CT/Providence) paced the East with 26 and 15 points, respectively, during the 84-72 victory over the West.

Calhoun, selected his team’s MVP, scored 27 of those points in the first half to push his team to a 44-28 advantage.

Dajuan Coleman (Syracuse Jamesville-Dewitt/Syracuse), another future Big Easter, had a game-high 12 rebounds while unsigned big men Nerlens Noel (Everett, Mass., The Tilton School) and Christopher Obekpa (Our Savior New Academy Christian, NY) combined to block seven shots.

Texas-bound center Cameron Ridley (Richmond, TX, Bush) scored 16 points to earn MVP for the West.

The second game was much more competitive, with the South prevailing, 86-85, by way of two Braxton Ogbueze (Charlotte United Faith Christian) free throws with 10 seconds to go.

Baylor-bound Ricardo Gathers (Laplace, LA, Riverside Academy) and future Virginia forward Evan Nolte (Milton, GA) scored 16 points each for the South.

Glenn Robinson Jr. (Schereville, IN, Lake Central) – who signed with Michigan in November and was as good as any player in the event – led the North with 16 points.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
