State Southern Regionals/Division IV

Wednesday’s first-round matchups (all 7 p.m. unless noted)

Upper bracket: No. 1 Gardena Serra (29-2)/bye; No. 9 San Diego Francis Parker (17-11) at No. 8 Inglewood Animo South L.A. (20-7); No. 12 Tollhouse Sierra (25-5) at No. 5 L.A. Pacific Hills (28-4); No. 13 Kingsburg (17-11) at No. 4 Encino Crespi (23-7).

Lower bracket: No. 14 Chowchilla (22-7) at No. 3 L.A. Price (22-8); No. 11 Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart (25-6) at No. 6 La Jolla Country Day (20-9); No. 10 N. Hollywood Campbell Hall (13-17) at No. 7 Visalia Central Valley Christian (28-2), 7:30; No. 15 Ontario Christian (21-3) at No. 2 La Verne Lutheran (23-7).

Division V

Wednesday’s first-round matchups (all 7 p.m. unless noted)

Upper bracket: No. 1 Playa Del Rey St. Bernard (23-7)/bye; No. 9 Encino Holy Martyrs (20-11) at No. 8 Fresno Christian (24-2); No. 12 San Diego Jewish Academy (14-11) at No. 5 Sun Valley Village Christian (20-3); No. 13 Burbank Providence (26-5) at No. 4 San Luis Obispo Mission Prep (23-6).

Lower bracket: No. 14 San Diego Vincent Memorial (22-6) at No. 3 Sunland Renaissance Academy (24-6); No. 11 San Diego Rock Academy (18-10); No. 10 Wildomar Cal Lutheran (20-4) at No. 7 Cajon Foothill Christian (20-11); No. 15 Laton (16-14) at No. 2 L.A. Ribet Academy (20-9).

What to watch for:

*Division IV top seed Serra has already knocked off No. 2 Lutheran and No. 3 in the Southern Section semifinals and final. No. 4 Crespi lost to Lutheran in the other Southern Section semifinal.

*St. Bernard should be considered an overwhelming Division V favorite based upon its 16-point victory over No. 2 Ribet Academy in the Southern Section final. The Vikings’ biggest obstacle to a second consecutive regional title and trip in the state championship game could be No. 4 Mission Prep in a likely semifinal.

*The most compelling individual matchup should take place in a likely Saturday IV second-round game between No. 2 Lutheran and No. 7 Central Valley Christian, which would pit Lutheran 6-9 McDonald’s All-American (and Arizona recruit) Grant Jerrett and 6-8 Grant Verhoeven, who signed with Stanford in November.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
