ANAHEIM, CA – The first day of CIF Southern Section boy’s hoops final got underway on Thursday in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.

And the top seeds in each game prevailed, two of those in fairly lopsided fashion . . .

IV-A

L.A. Pacific Hills 65, Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart 42: Too deep, too quick, too tenacious . . . take your pick but Pacific Hills was just “too much” for the Cardinals.

And there was certainly too much defense for the Cardinals – and their standout junior, Jose Estrada – to overcome.

Estrada rung up 49- and 50-point performances during the playoffs and had 15 in a Thursday first half that ended with Pacific Hills up, 33-28.

But he was held to four points over the third and fourth quarters as the top-seed Bruins steadily pulled away behind the play of senior point guard Brandon Taylor (23 points and seven assists) and sophomore swingman Namon Wright (14 points and four rebounds).

IV-AA

Gardena Serra 69, La Verne Lutheran 59: McDonald’s All-American Grant Jerrett spent about five minutes after picking up his fourth foul late in the third quarter for Lutheran.

He ultimately returned, with about five minutes to go and didn’t foul out. It didn’t matter, though, as the Mohicans had already seized control.

Six-foot-six senior Daddy Ugbede led Dwan Hurt’s Serra club with 32 points (he was 14 of 20 from mostly in close) and seven rebounds while 6-5 senior Dakarai Tucker – hitting three 3s – chipped in with 21.

Jerrett finished with 19 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots

Each of the aforementioned clubs will advance to State Southern Regional Division IV action, beginning next Wednesday evening.

III-AA

Calabasas 69, South Torrance 39: After one quarter, the Coyotes were in front of the Spartans, 25-2.

And, yes, that was pretty much that.

Slick sophomore point guard Jeremy Lieberman led the way with 15 points and was credited with two assists (it seemed like he had a few more than that).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
