  NEW ORLEANS

   Game One

Kentucky 69, Louisville 62

Why Kentucky won: The Wildcats never could really create enough distance to secure the outcome until the closing minute, largely because Anthony Davis was the only Kentucky player to perform at an elite level for the entire contest. But Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist all came through in big ways when John Calipari’s crew was most threatened in the second half.

The Turning Point: Davis scored as the Wildcats beat the Cardinals’ full-court pressure to go up, 65-58, with 1:09 to go.

The Star: Davis went for 18 points, 14 rebounds, five blocked shots, two assists and a steal. Just as significantly, he was the reason why the Cardinals missed 16 dunks/layups and often fumbled passes or rebound attempts.

The X Factor: Kidd-Gilchrist scored all nine of his points after intermission; he played just the first six minutes of the first half after picking up his second foul.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
