ANAHEIM, CA –The Mayfair Monsoons haven’t lost a game since dropping a consolation game of the Torrey Pines Tournament to San Jose Mitty on Dec. 30.

And the way they looked on Saturday afternoon in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena, that could prove to be their final loss of this season.

Coach Tony Davis’ club got 20 points from senior forward Dion Wright and 13 more from his junior brother, guard Brian Wright, to pull away from Santa Maria Righetti, 60-45, in the CIF Southern Section’s Division IIA championship game.

The Monsoons (26-5) had too much overall quickness for the Warriors (24-6), who committed 18 turnovers and missed nine of 10 shots from behind the arc.

Either Mayfair or La Costa Canyon of the San Diego Section is likely to be the No. 1 overall seed when the State Southern Regional Division II bracket is unveiled on Sunday.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
