ANAHEIM, CA – Leading by seven points, the Simi Valley Royal Highlanders were just a couple of minutes away from claiming a CIF Southern Section IIAA title in a clash with Inglewood Saturday morning in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.

But the junior-laden Sentinels, taken the lead for good on a penetration pass from Randy Onwuasor pass to Charles Lockwood, the 6-foot-10 Lockwood converting for layup, and a free throw, with 52 seconds to go.

Inglewood hung on for a 60-57 victory when the Highlanders’ J.R. Powell missed a contested 3 with two seconds to go.

Onwuasor scored 13 points while fellow juniors Kristopher Randall and Nicholas Smiley added 15 apiece.

The Highlanders – which probably led for about 29 of the game’s 32 minutes – will join the Sentinels in the State Southern Division II Regional tournament that begins Wednesday.

The best college prospect in the game may have been wearing a Royal uniform as 6-8 junior Scott Woods had 14 points and 14 rebounds while blocking six shots.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
