The Nevada Basketball Development League returned for its second of four weekends at Clark High School in Las Vegas.
Some of last week’s standouts, such as Stephen Zimmerman, Josh Wade, and Julian Jacobs, were not in attendance.
With some room on center stage left vacant, Las Vegas’ guard prospects stepped up.
Eddie Clyde Austin, Jr. from Green Valley and Bishop Gorman’s Noah Robotham starred with strong scoring performances.
Austin, Jr. showed that he can score around the basket, finishing his drives with contact and getting to the free throw line.
Robotham scored frequently from beyond the three-point line while distributing the ball well and converting from the charity stripe.
Junior guards Tyler Jones from Durango and Juwon Major from Las Vegas HS also scored well, showing off their athleticism with several dunks.
Bishop Gorman’s Rashad Muhammad and Obim Okeke turned in good efforts, too.
Muhammad made known that he’s more than just an elite shooter, as he played physical defense and finished multiple strong drives to the basket.
The sophomore Okeke used his aggressively drove to the basket to create open perimeter shots for his teammates.
Three of last week’s top point guards, Muir’s Cameron LeShore, Lake Mead Academy’s Justin Yamzon, and unsigned senior Markeith Floyd from El Dorado, demonstrated that their previous performances were no fluke.
LeShore continued to get to the basket at will with his quickness and handle.
Yamzon again showed why he led Nevada in scoring this season, knocking down jumpers from all over the floor.
Floyd’s vision and passing skills have consistently been among the best in the league.
Not to be lost among the Vegas guards, Providence freshman Marcus LoVett played excellent basketball. His ability to change speed and direction with the dribble proved a serious challenge for defenders. On Saturday, he dunked for the first time in a high school setting.
Coronado’s Sam Bittner, Kwinton Hinson from Valley, and Colby Jackson from Clark stood out as the weekend’s top freshmen.
While Bittner and Hinson impressed last week with their awareness and impressive all-around game, Jackson was a new addition. He has a superior outside shot and good enough quickness and ball-handling skills to score in the lane.
Senior forwards Ben Carter and Demetris Morant from Bishop Gorman, who are headed to Oregon and UNLV respectively, each participated in one day of action.
Carter’s passing and shooting skills will make him an asset to the Oregon Ducks.
Morant, who will be staying in town to play at UNLV this fall, dunked at least eight times on Sunday and protected the rim with his shot-blocking ability.
Another senior forward, Coronado’s 6-11 Lamar Walker, runs well and alters or blocks several shots every game.
Guards Jarrell Bell from Cheyenne, Boulder City’s Austin Morgan, and Eris Winder from Palo Verde each impressed in different ways.
Bell moves well and plays physically on both ends of the court, while Morgan and Winder excelled with their outside shooting and point guard play, respectively.
Kindell Kinloch, a New York transplant who is set to play at Palo Verde this fall, was the weekend’s most impressive newcomer. The 6-9 junior scored both with strong dunks and mid-range jump shots. His rebounding and active defense also stood out.
That’s all for this weekend.
