Poly and Mater Dei advance to IAA final

ANAHEIM, CA – Not quite a year ago, the Santa Ana Mater Dei Monarchs upset the CIF Southern Section I-AA champion in the quarterfinals of the State Southern Regional playoffs.

That 2011 IAA champion will try to avenge that loss Saturday night in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena in the 2012 I-AA title game.

The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits – stunned by the Monarchs in that Division I quarterfinal – pulled away down the stretch to beat Etiwanda, 56-47, in one I-AA semifinal Tuesday night.

And the Monarchs – the top seed – overcame a 10-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat L.A. Loyola, 61-58, in the second semi.

The Jackrabbits (27-1) – who’ve won 24 in a row since losing to Loyola on Dec. 3 in the Pacific Shores Tournament final in Redondo – used the dominant inside play of juniors Roschon Prince (22 points and 10 rebounds) and Jordan Bell (nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots) to hold off the Eagles, who were within two points late.

The Monarchs (28-2) – who haven’t lost to a team from Southern California this season – ultimately tightened up their defense and used the scoring and rebounding of Johnson & Johnson (senior Xavier and sophomore Stanley – not related), who combined for 39 points and 18 rebounds to overcome the Cubs.

Look for a detailed preview in a few days!

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
