VILLA PARK, CA – The second Villa Park High Coaches vs. Cancer one-day boys’ hoops event was held Saturday.

Here is a rundown on the games (note: I watched just the Palm Springs-Gahr and Villa Park-Los Alamitos contests):

*Redondo Beach Redondo Union 59, Huntington Beach Edison 49: The backcourt of sophomore Ian Fox (17) and junior Derek Biale (15) combined for 32 points to help the South Bay-based squad topple the Chargers in the South Bay-Orange County showdown.

Left-handed point guard Corey Foster scored 24 points for Edison while 6-4 senior Dreon Barlett added 14.

*Anaheim Canyon 65, Huntington Beach 62: Five-nine junior Jo Jo Ballestero scored 23 points to help his team hold off the Oilers, who were led by the 32-point effort of 6-6 junior Harley Ruder.

*Palm Springs 65, Cerritos Gahr 39: Six-foot Jordan Pellum scored 26 points – many coming off the passes of 6-2 junior Quentin Taylor, who added 21 points for the winners in a game whose outcome was expected to be much more in doubt than it proved to be.

*Villa Park 62, Los Alamitos 52: Six-four Isaiah Bradford scored 22 points, sophomore point guard Luke Selway added 15 and 6-3 senior Aaron Ezra added 12 as the host Spartans knocked off the Griffins, who got 22 points from 5-11 junior Wes Mitter.

*Mission Viejo 84, Victor Valley 45: The Diablos won their 18th in a row (they opened their season with a loss to Southern California’s best team, Santa Ana Mater Dei) with double-figure scoring from four players, led by 6-3 senior Michael Cramer’s 14 points.

Six-three junior James Smith had a game-high 24 for the Jackrabbits.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
