LOS ANGELES – Highlighting the prep hoops action in Southern California this weekend is the fourth annual “Fairfax State Preview” – hosted by, logically, Fairfax High on Saturday.

The action gets underway at 10:30 a.m., with La Canada taking on El Camino of Oceanside.

The rest of the schedule:

Noon, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame vs. San Diego Francis Park;

1:30 p.m., Santa Monica vs. Mission Hills Alemany;

3, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake vs. San Diego Torrey Pines;

4:30, L.A. Price vs. L.A. Windward;

6:30, L.A. Fairfax vs. Gardena Serra

8, Orange Lutheran vs. L.A. Loyola

FRIDAY NIGHT’S best matchups have (in the Trinity League) Santa Ana Mater Dei at Bellflower St. John Bosco (7 p.m.) and (in the Moore League) Long Beach Poly at Compton (6:30 p.m.).

Fans – especially for the Trinity League clash – are urged to get into the gymnasiums as quickly as possible. There should be a large crowd at Compton and a humongous gathering at St. John Bosco.

I’m in Las Vegas for a wedding Saturday night so won’t be in attendance at any of the aforementioned contests.

For Twitter updates from the Mater Dei-SJB game and contests at Fairfax, follow Joel Francisco of ESPN.com at JoelFranESPN for the straight stuff!

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
