Classic prep showdown in L.V. Saturday

Prep hoops happenings for the weekend in the West . . .

*I’ll be in San Juan Capistrano, CA (just a few miles south on the 5 Freeway from where I live in Laguna Niguel) Friday night to watch the Trinity League confrontation between the state’s best team, Santa Ana Mater Dei, and host JSerra.

The host Lions (12-5 overall) have won three league games in a row after opening league with a tight loss at Bellflower St. John Bosco (which is led by brothers Isaac and Daniel Hamilton).

Coach Joedy Gardner has his own set of gifted brothers in 6-foot-7 junor Devon Pflueger and his 6-3 freshman sibling Rex Pflueger.

Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight has a couple of the West’s best seniors in UNLV-bound Katin Reinhardt and future University of Colorado Buffalo Xavier Johnson, along with one of the nation’s best sophomores in Stanley Johnson.

Check for my Twitter comments on the game by way of my FrankieBur account.

*COX Pavilion (located adjacent to Thomas & Mack Arena on the UNLV campus) is the site for the Las Vegas “Big City Showdown” on Saturday.

The main attraction – nationally ranked powerhouses, each with talent-laden rosters, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman vs. Henderson Findlay Prep – is set to tip off at 2 p.m. (PST) in front of a SRO-only crowd and be nationally televised by ESPNU.

Each squad rolled to impressive victories Monday in Springfield, MA, during the Hall of Fame Classic – Gorman handing Hyattsville, MD, DeMatha its first loss and Findlay Prep toppling unbeaten and top-ranked Chicago Simeon.

There will be two preliminary contests, with Southern California squads (Playa del Rey St. Bernard and Los Angeles Ribet Academy) entering the breakfast crowd at 10:30 and two Las Vegas teams (Foothill and Coronado) going at it at lunch time – noon.

Las Vegas-based James Kerti (who designed and does the upkeep for this website) will be in attendance and file a report for www.BurlisonOnBasketball.com!

*I ATTENDED the MLK/Price Shootout at Price High in Las Angeles on Monday and it was a marvelous event.

Among the standouts during the 12 games played at Price and St. Bernard (in neighboring Playa del Rey, located kitty-corner to LAX) were – arguably – the three best freshman guards in the West.

The Ribet Academy-North Hollywood Campbell Hall featured two of those players, 6-4 Tyler Dorsey (Ribet) and 6-2 Aaron Holiday (Campbell Hall), the youngest sibling of Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Jrue Holiday.

Dorsey’s team won handily but both he and Holiday were outstanding (I’d seen each play before). They’re big, relatively strong and have pretty advanced ball-handling skills.

But they don’t yet have the “point guard skills” possessed by 5-11 Marcus LoVett of Burbank Providence, which lost to Inglewood Morningside in the second game played at Price on Monday.

The left-handed LoVett has been a volume scorer – and shooter – at times this season while averaging about 30 points per game.

But there is no denying that, most of the time, he “thinks” the game like a “run-the-team, get-the-ball-where-it-needs-to-go” playmaker.

Look for each of the three to be high-profile prospects, nationally, for the rest of their prep careers.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
