VILLA PARK, CA – Are you craving some quality high school basketball action to watch, up close and personnel, today?

Then I suggest out make the trek to north Orange County to visit Villa Park High (18042 Taft Avenue in Villa Park) to watch Coach Kevin Reynolds’ Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase.

The first of five games gets underway at 2 o’clock, when Huntington Beach Edison takes on Redondo Beach Redondo.

The next four games: 3:30, Anaheim Canyon vs. Huntington Beach; 5, Palm Springs vs. Cerritos Gahr; 6:30, Villa Park vs. Los Alamitos; 8, Mission Viejo vs. Victor Valley.

Edison is led by one of Southern California’s most underrated seniors in 6-foot-3 Dreon Barlett while Redondo is paced by a jump-shooting specialist in 6-1 junior Derek Biale.

Canyon has a freshman point guard in Nick Anderson – the brother of UCLA’s Jerime Anderson and the University of San Diego’s Chris Anderson.

The Palm Springs-Gahr clash could be a dandy.

Palm Springs has a highly underrated – for now – junior in 6-2 Quentin Taylor while the Gladiators are paced by 6-1 Anthony Martinez and two solid juniors in 6-4 Brian Nebo and 6-6 Kyle Benton.

Villa Park has a very good sophomore in 6-3 Luke Selway while Mission Viejo has one of the better juniors in Orange County in 6-3 Evan Zeller.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.

Director of International Basketball, Nike
