The 49ers may enhance tourney hopes vs. Creighton

January 31, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – The pairings for the 10th BracketBusters were unveiled Monday evening and there were some intriguing – and potentially entertaining – matchups indeed.

Ultimately, I’m not sure how much any of those matchups will impact the at-large selections and seeding for the NCAA Tournament field of 68 when the bracket is unveiled on the evening of March 11.

But they should be enjoyable to watch, with some having a sort of “NCAA Tourney feel” to them.

*Murray State is the last of the unbeatens but the Racers will face their biggest challenge so far with their BB showdown with Saint Mary’s (Feb.

LAS VEGAS, NV – The annual Bishop Gorman-Findlay Prep contest headlined the Big City Showdown held at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion on Saturday.

The star-studded matchup of two of the nation’s best teams drew a sold-out crowd, which included UNLV’s Stacey Augmon, former UCLA standout Ed O’Bannon, and Philadelphia Phillies’ outfielder Shane Victorino.

Legendary former coaches George Raveling and Jerry Tarkanian took in the action together from court-side seats.

Here’s what we saw:

* Playa del Rey, CA, St. Bernard 77, Los Angeles Ribet Academy 64: 6-8 sophomore center Idrissa Diallo contributed 16 points on several athletic dunks for Ribet Academy.

Classic prep showdown in L.V. Saturday

January 20, 2012 By Frank Burlison 3 Comments

Prep hoops happenings for the weekend in the West . . .

*I’ll be in San Juan Capistrano, CA (just a few miles south on the 5 Freeway from where I live in Laguna Niguel) Friday night to watch the Trinity League confrontation between the state’s best team, Santa Ana Mater Dei, and host JSerra.

The host Lions (12-5 overall) have won three league games in a row after opening league with a tight loss at Bellflower St. John Bosco (which is led by brothers Isaac and Daniel Hamilton).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
