SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’s TOP 10 HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS

1.       SANTA ANA MATER DEI (2010-11 record/32-3)

Frank Says: Coach Gary McKnight has as much depth as he has possessed in a while and he can put five players on the floor at the same time capable of scoring 25 points in any given game.

2.       L.A. LOYOLA (25-6)

Frank Says: A reasonable suggestion can be made that the Cubs should be rated “1-B” to the Monarchs’ 1-A”. They might have better depth than Mater Dei and sophomore Parker Jackson-Cartwright is already the state’s best point guard.

3.       LA VERNE LUTHERAN (26-5)

Frank Says: Arizona-bound Grant Jerrett is the best college prospect in the California senior class. The players around him aren’t bad, either.

4.       LONG BEACH POLY (31-2)

Frank Says: If the Jackrabbits get reliable guard play and consistent jump shooting in support of elite juniors Roschon Prince and Jordan Bell, they would be capable of successfully defending their Southern Section I-AA title against Mater Dei and Loyola.

5.       ORANGE LUTHERAN (27-7)

Frank Says: Gabe York and Payton Banks are two of the state’s most skilled offensive players.

6.       MISSION HILLS ALEMANY (20-11)

Frank Says: The Warriors have a strong and physical group on the perimeter (including Nevada-bound Marqueze Coleman) and a sophomore on track for stardom in Bear Henderson.

7.       COMPTON (21-11)

Frank Says: Senior Victor Robbins is going to accumulate scoring and rebounding numbers but the Tarbabes will need strong leadership from him as well with a couple of sophomores and a freshman getting significant minutes.

8.       BELLFLOWER ST. JOHN BOSCO (21-9)

Frank Says: The Braves are in the Top 10 largely because of three newcomers – Coach Derrick Taylor (from Woodland Hills Taft) and Isaac and Daniel Hamilton (transfers from L.A. Crenshaw).

9.       L.A. PRICE (23-8)

Frank Says: Skylar Spencer (a San Diego State signee) and junior guard Chance Murray are key returnees with sophomore Christopher Sandifer ready to evolve into a standout as well

10.    GARDENA SERRA (15-10/wins forfeited)

Frank Says: The Cavaliers have size, led by dominant low-post presence Daddy Ugbede and a skilled set of perimeter players, including Dakari Tucker and Kajon Mack.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Gary McKnight

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
