The John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 candidates list was released Monday morning.

There were nine differences from the “official” list (culled from the submissions of all of the advisory committee members across the country) and the list I turned in a few weeks ago.

Here are the nine players on the “official” list that were not on mine:

  • Dee Bost (6-2, Sr./Mississippi State)
  • Elias Harris (6-7 Jr./Gonzaga)
  • Joe Jackson (6-0 So./Memphis)
  • Darius Johnson-Odom (6-2 Sr./Marquette)
  • Andrew Nicholson (6-9 Sr./St. Bonaventure)
  • Peyton Siva (6-0 Jr./Louisville)
  • Joshua Smith (6-10 So./UCLA)
  • Maalik Wayns (6-2 Jr./Villanova)
  • Patric Young (6-9 So./Florida)

And here are the nine on my list that didn’t make the preseason cut on the “official” list:

  • Reggie Hamilton (6-2 Sr. Oakland/17.4 pg/5.4 apg as a junior/lit up first-round pick Cory Joseph for 25 points, 6 rebs and 5 assists and only 2 TOs in 85-81 NCAA tourney loss to Texas
  • Ken Horton (6-6 Sr. Central Connecticut/Northeast Conference POY as junior when he averaged 19.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting .489 from the field)
  • Doron Lamb (6-5 So. Kentucky/12.3 points per game as frosh/Calipari raving about him of late)
  • Dominique Morrison (6-6 Sr. Oral Roberts/19.4 ppg and .512 FG shooting as junior)
  • Robert Sacre (7-0 Sr. Gonzaga/12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game, with .490 FG percentage as junior)
  • Mike Scott (6-8 Sr. Virginia/15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game before suffering season-ending knee injury 10 games into junior season)
  • Deshaun Thomas (6-6 So. Ohio State)/7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, with .479 shooting percentage as sophomore)
  • Erving Walker (5-7 Sr. Florida/second-team all-SEC and 14.4 points, 3.3 assists and .411 shooting as junior, including .385 on 3s)
  • Kyle Weems (6-6 Sr. Missouri State/MVC Player of Year as junior when he averaged 16.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting .480 from the field, including .395 on 3s)

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
