Bishop Gorman impresses

CORONA, CA –There wasn’t a whole lot surprising about what took place Sunday during action at The LEAGUE, the prep fall league action hosted by the Compton Magic at the Players’ Edge facility in this Riverside County community.

Las Vegas Bishop Gorman – with Shabazz Muhammad in uniform and on the floor, a bit more than 12 hours after landing in Ls Vegas following his weekend visit to the University of Kentucky – handled three quality opponents.

The Gaels (called “LV Orangemen” in the league) knocked off the Arizona Magic (made up of the players from Basha High in Chandler, Arizona), L.A. Windward and Long Beach Poly.

Each of Coach Grant Rice’s “Big Four” – literally and figuratively – took turns dominating stretches of the three games.

UNLV-bound Demetris Morant played “middle blocker” – in volleyball parlance – against Basha junior 6-8 standouts Torren Jones and Maurice Kirby, all but tattooing basketball imprints on their foreheads.

President Obama’s “Jobs Bill” had a better chance of getting Republican senatorial support than Jones and Kirby did of scoring over or around Morant.

While Morant was wreaking havoc on the defensive end, teammate Rosco Allen – likely to end up at Stanford or North Carolina, although Oregon and UNLV are still in the hunt – scored in just about any fashion you want to see how of a “wing” forward. He nailed jumpers (both off the catch and dribble) – of the mid- and deep-range variety – converted a couple of high-degree-of-difficulty- baseline drives and rammed home a transition dunk despite being challenged.

The other 6-8 Bishop Gorman senior, Ben Carter (UNLV, Oregon or Utah), had a masterful afternoon of post play, scoring repeatedly from either low block on layups and turnaround jumpers.

As for the 6-5 Muhammad (who says he doesn’t plan on making a college decision this fall), well, he saved his best for the last game, scoring on several post-up moves against Poly junior Roschon Prince, picking up a couple of dunks and snapping in several mid-range jumpers in transition.

When the efforts by Muhammad’s junior brother (Rashad) and 6-10 freshman Stephen Zimmerman are tossed into the mix, you can understand why – in all likelihood – Coach Grant Rice is in proud possession of the best frontcourt on any high school team (at least of the non-prep school variety) in the country.

That being said, there wasn’t a more impressive player on the premises – well, unless you want to count the Toronto Raptors’ Demar DeRozan, who watched alma mater Compton’s team play twice – than La Verne, CA, Lutheran’s Grant Jerrett in action.

There can’t be a more skilled senior four-man in the country than the soon-to-be Arizona Wildcat.

Others who impressed Sunday included 6-5 sophomore Isaiah Bailey (Compton), and 6-6 Windward freshmen Roy Hemsley and Mason Shepard, as well as 6-4 freshman guard Tyler Dorsey and 6-9 sophomore center Idrissa Diallo, both of L.A. Ribet Academy.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
