What happens in Vegas Wednesday night

At least nine of the best 100 or so players in the national prep basketball senior class are expected to be in the same gymnasium Wednesday night.

The “Best of Vegas” is on tap at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, with the evening’s action scheduled to culminate in a game featuring the Findlay Prep team taking on a squad heavily populated by Bishop Gorman’s plethora of elite prospects.

Gorman’s four high major-bound seniors – Shabazz Muhammad, Rosco Allen, Ben Carter and Demetris Morant – along with future UNLV guard Katin Reinhardt (Santa Ana, CA, Mater) will pace the “Best of Vegas” team that faces Findlay Prep at 9 p.m. in the capper of the evening’s contests.

Findlay Prep is paced by seniors Brandon Ashley (committed to Arizona), Dominic Artist (UCLA), Anthony Bennett and Winston Shepard, along with juniors Christian Wood and Nigel Goss-Williams.

So, how does Muhammad vs. Shepard, Wood vs. Allen, Ashley vs. Carter and Bennett vs. Morant sound, with Artis vs. Reinhardt tossed in for good measure?

That’s worth the $10 admission by itself.

But . . . there’s more.

Things get underway at 5 o’clock, with the Top 20 eighth-grade/freshman contest, followed at 6 by the Top 20 sophomore contest, the Top 20 juniors at 7 and the Top 40 seniors at 8.

I’ll be there so that you can read about it here.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
