Top prep hoopsters in Westwood-bound migration

It figured.

Kyle Anderson, of St. Anthony in Jersey City, NJ, is probably one of the most active high school participants in the Twitter Universe.

He’s also one of the most gifted high school basketball players in any universe.

So, a little more than an hour ago, he announced his college choice to his 4,246 Twitter followers – and gosh-only-knows how many others via re-tweeting – by way of his @KyleAnderson5 “Vinny Chase” account the night before his 18th birthday.

Anderson – the most skilled player in the national class of 2012 – obviously is a big Entourage fan.

The series came to a close a couple of weeks ago – literally; some would suggest that its figurative end was probably after the second season.

But it’s looking as if a year from now Anderson is going to be a part of a Bruins’ freshman class that will be a heck a lot more entertaining than the HBO show was for much of the past handful of seasons.

Jordan Adams, a Dennis Scott- or Nick Anderson-like jump shooter from Georgia by way of Oak Hill Academy, was the first member of the Class of 2012 to commit to Ben Howland and the Bruins in the spring.

And then it was the west’s best senior point guard prospect Dominic Artis of Richmond (near Oakland), who is spending his senior season at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., who announced for the Bruins in July.

The 6-foot-8 Anderson – a point guard by inclination with the skill and size to be one of the best players in college at several positions – confirmed the better part of the day’s recruiting speculation by “Tweeting” for the Bruins Monday night.

Who is next?

Although Shabazz Muhammad may not sign a national letter of intent until the spring and still lists seven schools as possible destination, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone who follows recruiting closely that doesn’t think Anderson’s announcement bodes well for the Bruins’ chances of landing the dynamic scorer from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas.

He and Anderson are tight – as in, really, really close buddies.

The most telling Twitter congrats Anderson got after his announcement on his birthday came from @phenom15balla.

“Congrats to my brother @KyleAnderson5 on being a ucla bruin !!!!!!”

That’s Muhammad’s account.

Does Anderson turn down in-state Seton Hall along with Florida, Georgetown and St. John’s and go all the way to UCLA without Shabazz giving him a pretty good hint that he’s Westwood-bound as well?

If Muhammad comes aboard, whenever that might be, and is joined by a high-quality post prospect – say, one of two Georgia players, Tony Parker (Lithonia) or Shaq Goodwin (Decatur) – then the Bruins’ class is likely to be anointed the best in the country by those who spend a lot of time contemplating those things.

Not that, ultimately, it means a whole lot when the college uniforms are put on and games are won and lost on the court, not in a battle of dueling recruiting ratings.

Programs that get to Final Fours and win national titles do so with exceptional teams, not mythical recruiting championships.

But so much for one “myth” perpetrated by some of late – that the Bruins, at least under Howland, could no longer attract nationally “elite” prospects.

Hello there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering
which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had issues with
hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform.

I would be great if you could point me in the direction
    of a good platform.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
